Using Meta Tags to Build Website Page Rank and Popularity

The key to using your Meta tags to build page rank and getting your site appear on the first page for a search is keywords. The steps to developing effective Meta tags are:

• Choose your relevant keywords - and keyword combinations. You will be limited to 5 or 6
• Build the content for your site based on these keywords. Include the keywords in the Heading on top if your page and again in the first few sentences at the top of the page
• Create a TITLE tag using the same keywords in a condensed form separated by commas, that makes sense and reads well. Google indexes your title tags so keep them relevant to the page content, descriptive, and keyword rich. Generally keep to 65 characters or less - but can be longer to include all your keywords
• Create a meta DESCRIPTION tag to sell your site, also based on these keywords, especially the first sentence. Keep the length to less that 265 letters - can be several sentences
• Create a meta KEYWORDS tag based on these keywords. Though the value of the keywords tag has been greatly reduced it is still worth including it for directories etc.
• The first words in any tag are assumed to be given more weight, so these are most important. The order of the words is also critical and so it is worth spending some time getting the phrase right and using it in the Title, Description and Page contents
• All the meta tag text on all of the sub-pages has to be unique. Change several words for each new page. Otherwise Google may see your pages as duplicates.
