Using Links to Build Website Page Rank and Popularity
PageRank is a calculated score that represents how important a page is on the web. According to Google, it uses more that 200 bits of information about your site, including their Page Rank algorithm, to examine the entire link structure of the web and to rank the pages in terms of their relative importance. They then conduct hypertext-matching analysis to decide which pages bets match the terms used for the search being conducted. By combining overall ranks of importance with matched keywords the most relevant sites are listed first.
The Google's ranking algorithm places a lot of importance on Linking - both Inbound Links, which are links from other sites to yours Outbound Links which are sites that you link to from your site. The Google method starts by assuming that when one page links to your page, it is effectively giving a vote for your page. The more votes your page receives, the more important the page must be. The vote score is weighted according to the page rank of the site, more weight is given for higher ranking sites such as PR 4, 5 or 6, and less for site with PR of 1 or 2.
Google views your web site as being part of a group or Internet neighborhood and votes from relevant sites, that is site within your own neighborhood are also given extra weighting. The importance of your site in your group is determined by how many of your neighbours in your group link to you. For example lets say you have a Wine site. If you can get a major wine retailer site (with a high PR) to link to your site you will get extra weighing in the page rank algorithm. It is also important that the links on the other sites that link to you have anchor text that is also relevant to your web site and the keywords you are targeting.
