How to Select and Use Keywords to Build Website Page Rank and Popularity

To get your site listed on the first page of a Google Search you need you optimize the keywords you use on your site and how they are placed and used. This means finding the keywords your likely visitors might use in a search engine when looking for information related to your site.

The best way is to CHEAT. Find the websites that are listed first in the search results for your site's area of interest. Use 'View Source' to see the site's Index and Description Meta tags and what keywords and keyword phrases they have used. Also find what their current Page Rank value is and this will give you an idea of what you are up against in competing with them.

Some keywords and keyword combinations are very competitive and you may have to choose less popular ones to have a chance of success. Once you have examined several sites you will need to reduce your list to 3 to 6 main words. Some of the others may be used on one or more of your sub-pages. Building a site with many sub-pages is a great way to expand the number of keywords that are out there fishing for you. You can use the other keywords on the subpages especially by adding a page for each location or type, etc. There are many excellent tools for helping you find new keywords and their popularity.

Keyword Phrases and the Keyword Order
Combining keywords together to form a key phrase is important. The order of the words is important. If you conduct a search with four key words in various orders, you will get different results. The first few words in a Meta Tag or Title are very important, and so you should design your phrase to make sense and have the keywords at the start and in the right order. Generally, each page on your site should be designed to optimise outcomes for one key phrase.

How to Use Keywords

There is lots of information about how to effectively use keyword to optimise the success of your site by appearing in the first few listings on a Google search result. One of the best ways is to carefully choose a keyword phrase and then repeat it in the TITLE, the Meta Tag DESCRIPTION, the HEADING on the top of your page and in the first few sentences at the top of the page. This works well. You can add extra text before and after it for the description and website contents. This works well.

Keyword density

Keyword Density refers to the relative number of times your keywords appear on the page relative to the number of other words. The ideal density for keywords on the pages is about 5 to 10 per cent. Avoid excessive use of keywords or your site may be penalised, and ensure that all your text reads well and makes sense.
